New Christmas Fiction in Large Print

Since the stores have had Christmas merchandise for a while now, I've decided to feature some of our new Christmas novels that are available in large print.

Pretty Paper is the newest by singer/songwriter/actor/activist Willie Nelson. More than fifty years ago, Willie Nelson's Christmas classic "Pretty Paper" was released, and for all that time, Willie has wondered about the real-life Texas street vendor of wrappings and ribbons who inspired the song. Who was this poor soul? What were his trials and tribulations? This novelization explores just those sort of questions. It's the early sixties and Willie is down and out, just barely getting by as a singer/songwriter. Just a week before Christmas, he comes across a legless man with a cart selling his wares in front of a department store. The man's name is Vernon Clay, a staunchly private man who is in no mood to tell Willie his story. Eventually, Willie learns that Vernon is a fellow musician--a fine guitarist and singer. Vernon disappears and leaves only a diary that chronicles his tale of life-altering tragedy, broken hearts, honky tonks, crooked record execs, good cooking, and a genius for writing country songs.

In a continuation of her Lowcountry Summer series, Mary Alice Monroe offers readers A Lowcountry Christmas. A lesson of the true meaning of Christmas and the strength of family bonds is the center of this story of a wounded warrior and his younger brother. Ten-year-old Miller McClellan is feeling sorry for himself at the moment. Richard Paul Evans offers the tale of a lonely blogger in The Mistletoe Secret. The anonymous LBH pours her heart out in her blog thinking that no one is reading. She wants desperately to know what it's like to have another person to care about her. In Daytona Beach, Florida, Alex Bartlett is that person. He reads LBH's posts faithfully as he nurses his own broken heart. When Alex decides to follow a trail of clues LBH inadvertently leaves in her posts, he finds out that she lives in the small town of Midway, Utah. Just after Thanksgiving, he makes his way there determined to find the mysterious blogger. At the Mistletoe Diner, Alex finds Aria, a waitress who encourages his search and serves him pie along with much-needed sympathy and companionship.

Spotlight: Large Print Cozies

     This week, I decided to shed a spotlight on one of my favorite genres: Cozy mysteries, or "cozies". According to Wikipedia:* "Cozy mysteries, also referred to as "cozies", are a sub-genre of crime fiction in which sex and violence are downplayed or treated humorously, and the crime and detection take place in a small, socially intimate community." We have a huge selection in fiction, audio, mp3, and large print. Today, the focus will be on some of our newer large print cozies.
     (*I know, I know; I am loathe to use this as a reference, but it's an easy and simple definition.)

   The Diva Serves High Tea: a Domestic Diva Mystery is written by Krista Davis. The Parlour opens up in town and domestic diva Sophie Winston is ecstatic that she now has somewhere to satisfy her cravings for all things tea and crumpet. This quaint little shop also serves as a place for the women of town to gather, gossip, and check out the affable and dapper Robert Johnson who runs the new antique store across the street. All the gossip about Robert seems innocent enough until he is found dead--an apparent poisoning--after attending a fundraiser at The Parlour the previous evening. Will Sophie be able to put the clues together to save her new favorite watering hole?

     Egg Drop Dead is a Cackleberry Club Mystery by Laura Childs. The big secret to the Cackleberry Club cafe's success is maintaining a good personal relationship with each of their suppliers. Naturally, when Suzanne has to go to Mike Mullen's dairy to pick up some wheels of cheese, she is more than happy to do so. When she arrives, however, Mike is nowhere to be seen, so she decides to check the barn where she finds the poor man's body. Suzanne, Petra, and Toni are outraged that one of their favorite suppliers has been disposed of like the muck in the stalls and they vow to find out who has committed this horrible crime. But as they get closer to the truth, the killer becomes desperate and decides that the ladies of the Cackleberry Club must be put out to pasture, permanently!

     Cat With A Clue is a Bookmobile Cat Mystery by Laurie Cass. Minnie is shelving books in the library early one morning when she stumbles upon something unusual and very disturbing--a dead body. The authorities identify the woman as a visitor who came to Chilson, Michigan to attend her great-aunt's funeral. What no one can figure out, however, is why the woman was in the library after hours. The police also seem to be preoccupied with a string of strange break-ins as well. As wild rumors about the woman begin to circulate, Minnie and her black-and-white tabby, Eddie, have decided they are going to preserve the library's reputation by finding the killer. They track down clues as they drive the bookmobile around the county and Minnie will leave no page unturned in their quest!

Large Print Memoirs For Your Enjoyment

      "This Cider Still Tastes Funny!: Further Adventures of a Game Warden in Maine" is a memoir by John Ford. The author spent twenty years as a game warden in Waldo County in central Maine after completing a four year stint in the Air Force. Upon his retirement in 1990, he was elected county sheriff and re-elected in 1994. He carved out a reputation as a man of the law, but he wasn't a by-the-book enforcer. His quick wit and gift as a storyteller afforded a good quip as he slipped the cuffs on a criminal, but he wasn't above accepting a lesson learned as sufficient penalty for breaking the law. The fact that he is also able to laugh at himself endears him to the readers of his newspaper column and the Northwoods Sporting Journal to which he regularly contributes material.  

   

     "We Were Brothers" is a memoir by Barry Moser. Barry and Tommy Moser were born of the same parents, raised in the same small Tennessee town, and were both indoctrinated by their family's deep racism and anti-semitism. As the two grew older, however, their perspectives and paths diverged further and further apart. Their attitudes about race, politics, money, and even food became so different that they could no longer find any common ground. They could not talk to each other as they once had and, for many years, there was more strife than affection between the two. When Barry reached his late fifties and Tommy his early sixties, their simmering tensions reached a boiling point and their relationship shattered. From then on, the two would not speak to one another. Barry, recalls the raw, emotional reasons for their final reconciliation.  

    "Tough As They Come" is an autobiography by SSG Travis Mills with Marcus Brotherton. United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills was sure he would become another statistic when he was caught in an IED blast four days before his twenty-fifth birthday. Against all odds, however, Travis lived, but at a severe cost—he became one of only five soldiers from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to survive a quadruple amputation. He was suddenly forced to face the fact that he had no arms or legs and that his future would be drastically different than what he had always envisioned. He would never again be able to lead his squad, stroke his fingers against his wife's cheek, or pick up his baby girl. It took tremendous willpower and endurance, not to mention the unconditional love of his family and a huge helping of faith to get through the painful and anxious days of his rehabilitation.      This week I have decided to feature three of our new western novels from the Large Print collection.

   Shawn O’Brien, Town Tamer is a western novel by William W. Johnstone with J. A. Johnstone. Unfortunately, Charlie is the only gang member to be caught alive and he is sentenced to hang to the crime.
