Stephanie even considers changing jobs---and you'll never guess what she tries her hand at next. It's best to start reading this series at the beginning (One for the Money is the first one) as the characters' stories build on each other throughout the series. If you love humor, entertaining characters and situations that are a whole lot of fun, you will LOVE Janet Evanovich's "Stephanie Plum" series of books. Her latest, Smokin' Seventeen is another enjoyable romp with her usual characters through the streets of Trenton, NJ. Stephanie is a former lingerie seller turned bounty hunter who works for her sleazy cousin Vinnie. Stephanie has the enviable problem of being in serious "like" with two men--Joseph Morelli (handsome police officer and owner of a lovable dog) and Ranger (dark, mysterious, sometimes bounty hunter who owns his own security firm). Stephanie can't figure out which man she should date, especially since her mom and grandmother are breathing down her neck for her to get married and settle down. The action of this novel begins when a body is found buried on the vacant lot where the former bail bonds office was located (it burned up in a fire at the end of the last book). Vinnie and his crew are working temporarily in an RV located on the former site, when a body turns up...and then they keep turning up! All is fine until the killer starts dedicating the bodies to Stephanie---and why does the killer's image that is caught on a camera seem so familiar to her? Stephanie's friend and Vinnie's file clerk Lula (a plus-size former prostitute) is at her raucous best in this novel, whether she and Stephanie are fighting off FTA's who believe they are vampires or buying sandwiches and eluding Morelli's Grandma Bella at Giovichinni's deli. I love these zany mysteries and I know you will love them too! I suggest starting with the first book in the series, One for the Money, so that you don't miss out on one second of the action!
It is my fervent wish that Janet Evanovich never stops writing books in her Stephanie Plum series. These books are laugh-out-loud funny and give me the opportunity to share with other folks a new author (I'm always reading one of them in a public place when the person sitting next to me asks what book I'm reading that is causing me to laugh so much)! In this installment, Sizzling Sixteen, Stephanie's Uncle Vinnie is kidnapped because he owes too much money to his bookie. This is a big problem because with Vinne kidnapped Stephanie is unable to do her job as a bounty hunter and collect funds so that she can pay her rent! Even though Vinnie is a sleaze, bless his heart, he is related to Stephanie and she feels as if she owes it to him to try and rescue him. Of course, she has help from plus-size former prostitute Lula, her policeman on-again-off-again boyfriend Morelli, the elusive bounty hunter and private contractor Ranger, and the Bonds Office Manager Connie. The group performs several hilarious rescue attempts while Stephanie is chased (literally) by the bad guys hunting Vinnie and (figuratively) by Morelli and Ranger. I enjoy this series because it paints a realistic portrait of Trenton, New Jersey and its residents and the book characters are very enjoyable. One for the Money, the first book in the series is currently in production as a movie and if it resembles the book even a little bit the movie should be a real treat to watch.
If Janet Evanovich's new Stephanie Plum series entry doesn't cause you to crave barbeque, then I don't know what will! Finger Lickin' Fifteen is a riot of a story, that lives up to the other fourteen books in the series. Stephanie Plum, lingerie-seller-turned-bounty-hunter, is at her zany best in this new novel, which centers around the murder of celebrity chef Stanley Chipotle. Chipotle visits Trenton, NJ to participate in a barbeque cook-off and ends up losing his head, unfortunately right in front of Lula, Stephanie's sidekick and fellow bail bonds office worker. Chipotle's killers spend their time trying to locate Lula to get rid of the only witness to his murder, and Lula recruits Stephanie to help her find Chipotle's killers so that she can feel safe and they can collect the reward money. Lula's big plan is to enter the barbeque competition that Chipotle had entered--and enlists Grandma Mazur's help in creating a prize-winning barbeque sauce (preferably one that doesn't give folks food poisoning). Stephanie also works overtime in this book, snooping for Ranger and his security company during the day, to help him discover who is breaking into his monitored homes and businesses and how they are accomplishing the burglaries. Evanovich again displays all of her beloved characters at their kooky best and delivers another humorous look at the life of the citizens of the 'burg in Trenton, NJ.
